Samsung Eyeing WebOS: Getting Ready to Give Tough Fight to Android and iOS

Despite the fact that Samsung has its own mobile operating system, rumors are abound that the Korean company is looking to acquire WebOS from HP. However, if other rumors are to be believed, then the company is also aiming for the PC operations of HP. But, we can count this one out as HP has clarified that it intends to keep its PC business.

According to DigiTimes, Samsung is willing to acquire WebOS to compete against iOS and Android. Apparently, Samsung is looking for an Android alternative after Google's acquisition of Motorola. At the very same time, even Korean government seems to be all that happy with Android. Apparently, it has told Samsung and LG to reduce their reliance on Android. Korean deputy commerce minister also expressed his hope that the two companies would be able to come up with a viable alternative to Android.

Already plagued with patent lawsuits, Android licensees are not too happy with Google's purchase of Motorola. With this acquisition, Google is now directly competing with its Android licensees. But at the very same time, companies like Samsung and HTC largely owe their success in smartphone segment to the adoption of Android operating system. According to industry experts, Samsung is likely to suffer if it decides to drop Android platform and go solo. Samsung manufactures phones for both Android and its home grown operating system Bada.
