Can The Windows Phone OS Ever Beat Android?

We all chuckled after an analyst recently predicted that the Windows Phone OS would go on to trump Android. But could he be right after all? The only reason we laughed is because Android is so popular, but its popularity grew out of nowhere. The fact Android even exists proof that an OS can find success suddenly, expectedly,  and shake the smartphone industry.

Microsoft's OS hasn't really grabbed anyone's attention yet, but they are clearly at the top of their game and if they keep playing one step ahead of their competitors the world will take notice eventually, at least that's what Microsoft will be hoping. Currently the best they've got to offer is documents on the go and Xbox Live compatibility.

But some exciting additions to the OS are on the way. The latest Windows Phone system was showcased recently at the MIX11 conference in Las Vegas. The upcoming iteration should bring the usual tweaks and improvements, including support for multitasking, but that's not all. Audio and file transfer, fast app switching, deeper OS integration and access to the camera and motion sensor library are all on their way. This is a perfect bundle of features which will generally improve the OS as well as provide flashy features to boost sales.

There's the camera and motion sensor which will enable augmented reality app. Augmented reality isn't original but it's a very important feature which could attract consumers if Microsoft pull it off. Microsoft also announced the new Microsoft Silverlight 5 beta, available now, providing support for hardware video decoding, a new XNA-based interface for delivering 3D visualizations within apps as well as Trickplay, a new feature that provides variable-rate video playback with audio pitch correction.

It's a goodtime for Microsoft with the kinect and the IE revival, but can they really pull of the same success they have seen in gaming with their OS?

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
