Xbox 360 update prevents pirated copies of Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2

The war against the game-pirates continues. Xbox 360 owners will wake to find that they must install a mandatory update for their console.

Unfortunately the update doesn't fix any bugs or add any swanky new features, instead it ruins your life. That's if you have a pirated copy of C.O.D Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops.

Users out there have noticed that it prevents pirated versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 from playing on the console.

Suspicion started brewing when the update was taking a little too long to download and then they discovered that backup copies of these games stopped working,

The update supposedly allows the console to automatically boot a pre-inserted game when you power it on (a feature that was accidentally disabled back in November.)

Obviously I don't condone piracy but blocking pirated copies is only half the battle Microsoft and co really need to look at why it is happening and that's because games are just too expensive.

Good! they deserve to be banned, if they can afford to modify a console they can afford to buy a game.

  • It doesn’t cost to modify a console, even if there are tools that cost to modify consoles, a free version adapted by the community is always made available …which is exactly why people do it, and in most cases, the modification itself is available for free with no tools involved.

I agree with the closing statement, games are simply to expensive and overpriced, I understand that it must cost a significant amount to develop a game, but pricing games around the £20-30 region would be much more of a lucrative incentive for developers to cover these costs and make a profit. If you think current sales figures are amazing for games such as the COD series considering the prices are in the £40+ region, they would be much, much higher if prices were in the £20-30 region. What developers and publishers fail to understand is that most console buyers and gamers are usually working class/middle class people whose incomes are not stupidly high who are always actively looking for a bargain, it is these people that tend to have a desire to want consoles and games more than any and most other people in society and it is these people that make up most of the populous in most countries around the world which means they are the primary pipeline of income for developers, publishers and gaming corporations.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
