CES 2010: Control a helicopter with your iPhone

Something I didn’t expect to be a hit at CES 2010, a toy!

The Parrot A.R. Drone is a remote control helicopter which has be getting quite a bit of attention at the event. You control it using WiFi via an app on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Tip your device the way you want the chopper to fly and viola! Built-in ultrasound sensors and an inertial guidance systems include an accelerometer and gyroscopes to keep the craft level during flight.

The even cooler part is the built in cameras (one on the front and one on the bottom) which beam footage of what your helicopter is ‘seeing’ back to you at ground control. This also means the Parrot A.R. Drone can be used in augmented reality games.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
