Following on from our review of the Samsung Omnia we can now confirm that first sightings of the ASUS Glaxy 7 are doing the rounds on the internet. With a strikingly similar appearance to the recently released Omnia, Samsung may well have something to be concerned by.
Purportedly running on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional platform, this sleek little number seems to be packing some impressive specs including a wide range of connectivity options: GPRS/EDGE/3G/HDSPA/HAUPA, a 3.5" colour TFT (WVGA 800×480), bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 5MP camera.
There is an expansion port for microSD cards if the 4GB of built in flash memory isn’t sufficient for you; the Glaxy 7 will play MPEG4, H.264 encoded video files too so you might be filling that flash memory sooner than you think. Of course, being a clever little beast it will play lots of music formats too, including: AAC, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, EVRC, QCELP, AAC + + EAAC, MP3, MIDI, PCM, WAV - I did say it was clever!
With a standby time of 200 hours, and a talk time of 4, the Glaxy 7 doesn’t seem able to match the Omnia’s claims of 500 and 5.8 hours respectively . The Asus also features a trackball style directional pad that should compliment the touch-screen functions.
The ASUS Glaxy 7 will hit the market next month (TBC) but whether it will make a splash is yet to be seen, given what is quickly becoming a highly saturated touch-screen arena. The camera has no flash function which is a mistake in my opinion given the demand for functionality in todays technology savvy consumer market. However, despite this the specs look pretty good, and launching the right side of Christmas isn’t going to hurt either.
