Are you currently in the grip of Star Trek fever? With the new film being out and variously hailed as anything from sheer genius to an all out abomination, fanboys across the globe are debating only one thing- Kirk versus Picard versus new Kirk.
Well, if you’re a proper Trekkie, and a fan of the former Kirk over any other, this is what by rights should be gracing your living room right now- a full scale replica of Captain James T Kirk’s command chair from the original series. Based on the chair originally designed by set designer Matt Jefferies, 1701 of these babies are being reproduced for geeks across the globe (why 1701 I don’t know- is that a Star Trek reference or just someones idea of being ‘wacky’?).
Stick it in the middle of the room, don a yellow jumper and enjoy swinging about, commanding your crew of space travellers/ children/ animals/ action figures (delete as appropriate). It’s decorated with all the various buttons and knobs you’d have seen in the series for activating view screens and making coffee (I bet there was a coffee button). But not only that- it also comes with build in sound effects too! Not only does it look the part, it actually sounds the part . The yellow alert button (front of the right arm rest) will give you nine originals sound samples, including the infamous ‘Space, the final frontier’ prologue, while the red alert button (front of the left arm rest) gives you seven further sound effects, such as the intercom sound, photon torpedo, and generic bridge background noise. If you close you’re eyes its almost like you’re there…
The chair is made of oak, steel and leather, and the sound comes from one built in speaker in the left arm rest, and it swivels the full 360 degrees. But you’d have to be on a captains salary to afford it- this replica will run you $2900 from Hammacher Schlemmer.
