It seems that the time has come for Sony to try and up the ante (and European sales of the PSP!) by once again invading our consciousness with another of its ‘You’ve got the whole world in your hands’ themed viral marketing videos.
A little while back we saw a rather stilted purportedly "fan" generated clip where one guy stacked up everything he "loves in the world" and then stood in front of the camera with his hand just at the bottom so that it all appeared to fulfill the "in his hand" requirement. Bizarrely, it seems that some of the things he loves best in the world include a sofa and a road sign, but each to their own, we say.
This time around we have a far less irritating minute or so of video and instead of pretending to be a competition entry this one actually advertises the competition, which is smart, because despite my quite disgusting numbers of hours spent online each week this one had actually completely slipped me by.
In the clip you see a lone guy carry a trestle table into shot and then begin to arrange what would appear to be his most treasured items on and around it.
As it progresses you can see that this isn’t a student selling off his life’s possessions for beer money, but rather a precise arrangement of keyboards, amps, shoes and a whole load of other eclectic items (including Scalextrik!) to form an oversize approximation of a PSP.
It’s actually pretty neat and a definite improvement over fake fan entries to the competition, I do have one qualm though, one bone of contention. Was it really necessary to have that upbeat and cheery ditty playing the whole time? I’m fairly sure they commissioned as annoying/catchy (delete as applicable) a tune as possible to hang this video on, it’s certainly going to be stuck in my head all day now, which kind of makes me think they’ve won. Shrewd move Sony!
