We reported just a little while ago that Apple was soon to be announcing its one billionth app store download, quite a feat indeed, and last night at around 10pm UK time that target was reached.
I’ve commented before that the success of Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch devices is monumental and with that success comes considerable market clout but the announcement of one billion downloads in just nine months is impressive indeed.
Estimating a target user base of around 37 million app capable devices, that works out to an average of 27 app downloads per user. Naturally, a whole heap of those will be free apps, but it’s still a very impressive average number.
According to the iTunes store the all-time top free app is the ubiquitous Facebook, whilst the all time top paid-for app is Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D priced at £3.49.
The winner of the billionth download competition is not yet known but whoever the lucky person is will scoop a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod Touch, an Apple Time Capsule, and last but not least, a $10,000 iTunes Gift Certificate. Pretty sweet, I’d say.
