Nokia E71 Preview: Ready to Trample the iPhone in its Tracks?

Overview

Here we go again! The same old story you think…she’s going to talk about another ‘supposed’ iPhone Killer. Well, this time I’m deadly serious as it’s time to make way for the Nokia E71. At face value, there is no iPhone cloning in sight but when we take a little closer look under it’s slim exterior, it seems we’re about to find that this smart device could give the Apple iPhone a run for its money…

So like I said it’s not going to win any style awards for being the best looking iPhone clone but if you’re looking for something a little different without all that annoying touchscreen malarkey then you’ve definitely come to right place as this sexy phone is said to be the slimmest QWERTY keyboard phone on the market today. The only let down is the textured pattern on the back of the phone, but it is great for all you butterfingered people out there who are constantly dropping your phones.

Now many have compared this phone to a Blackberry and you’d be wrong to disagree that this phone is for the business buffs who just can’t resist a sneaky email whilst the missus isn’t looking. However, it also adds the ‘FUN’ in functional so it doesn’t feel as business. This is because the E71 has two separate homescreens (a bit like Clark Kent and Superman), where one screen contains all your boring business applications like Word, Excel or PowerPoint and the other is more about have some fun, by including audio, video and games. It might take a bit of getting use to but it’s perfect for those people who would love a split personality phone.

With a 3.2 megapixel camera, this is where the E71 leaves the iPhone scratching it’s head as it is significantly better. Also, the auto focus is said to be quite nippy, especially great for those people who want to capture a quick picture in a flash. And as for storing all those pictures, there’s a MicroSD slot which accepts up to 8GB of memory. As well as this, there’s other things that you just would expect from the Finish giant which includes WiFi, HSDPA and A-GPS.

The problem that I’ve sometimes found with many smartphones is that the battery life is always compromised, however the E71 is quoted to return an astonishing 410 hours standby (that’s 17 days!) and if your a bit on talker on the phone then there’s an impressive 10 hours of talktime.

Gaj-it Verdict

Design: 8/10
Features: 9/10
Value: 9/10

We Say

If you’re looking for a straightforward QWERTY style smartphone rather than the touchscreen alternative then this phone is definitely the one. As well as its simplistic yet stylish design, this phone offers you the best of both worlds, a professional business phone for all your work needs and when its time to play…bags of fun features! An iPhone Killer? The features definitely show that it could give our Apple lovely a run for its money but I’m waiting to get my hands on one at the end of August to find out whether this is actually the cream of the crop.
