From today, iPhone users will now be able to say their handset has even more usability as they can now make free calls via Skype.
The new Skype application is available to download from the Apple App Store for the very reasonable price of free.
As is the usual deal, phone calls and instant messaging is completely free between Skype users while calls to other landlines and mobiles will be cheaper than normal network rates.
You will however need to be connected wireless network to make voice calls, which limits the functionality somewhat. This is to keep network operators relatively happy and give them the opportunity to still charge you to when you need to give your mum a call from a bus.
However, you can still see which of your friends is online and send them instant messages via 3G, Edge, GPRS or WiFi, so there is still some good functionality with this app.
Skype is also working to be more compatible with newer versions of the iPod Touch, which has WiFi capability but cannot make phone calls. The latest iPod Touch released last year does come with a microphone, so with the hardware in place, it won’t be long before you may get a free phone with your Touch.
The Skype app has been designed to fully integrate with the iPhone so you can immediately access your existing iPhone contacts on Skype without having to create a duplicate address book.
