Sony officials let slip to Kotaku.com that a major Playstation announcement is on the cards for tomorrow, March 31st
Quite what the announcemt will be wasn’t specifically mentioned but there were rumours of a PS3 and PSP price drop earlier in the month and some analysts have been predicting a PS3 price reduction since the beginning of the year.
You might be thinking that it’s an odd time to make any kind of Playstation announcement being as GDC 09 took place last week, and you’d be right, but be that as it may we’re expecting some sort of announcement from the gaming giant tomorrow.
So what’s your money on? PS3 price drop? PS2 price drop? Or could it even be the long-rumoured PSP phone.
Some reports earlier in the month took the alleged rifts between the Sony and Ericsson divisions (of the mobile partnership) as indications that Sony is positioning itself to launch its own handset, which is purported to be a modified PSP. Whilst we think that tomorrow’s announcement is unlikely to be a PSP phone, the thought of a PSP with mobile phone functionality fills us with some excitement.
Whatever the bombshell (crosses fingers, *please don’t be a PS2 price drop*) be sure to check back tomorrow to find out what Sony’s got in store for us.
UPDATE:
Now who didn’t cross their fingers hard enough? That’s right folks you guessed it; the exciting announcement is that the PS2 is now just $99, breaking that psychological $100 barrier.
With more than an 140 million units sold up until the middle of 2008 it seems that demand for the old workhorse remains strong.
Still, can’t help being a little disappointed.

I’ll buy a ps3 when the price drops not before! I already own a blu-ray player and sometimes I watch movies while playing video games so a ps3 won’t do that that’s for sure.
I’m sure there are a lot of people just like you who are waiting for an announcement of an official price cut before jumping on board the PS3 ship but with new rumours that Microsoft is aiming for a lounge centrepiece with its new system they might want to think about doing it sooner rather than later, there were speculative reports in 2007 that the 720 could come as early as 2010/2011.
