The Phantom Keystroker v2- how to be even more annoying

phantom-keystrokerSo April Fools Day is next week. I know its not exactly a wildly celebrated holiday once you get past the age of about ten, but sometimes everyone gets the urge to be just a little bit… wicked.

But buckets of water on top of the door or cling film on the loo seat just won’t cut it anymore, not in this technological age. No, if you want to mess with someone’s head now you’ve got to get them where it hurts- their computer.

And so we turn to thinkgeek.com and the Phantom Keystroker (Version 2- it’s been improved even!). It looks like a usb memory stick and a very boring one at that. Certainly nothing that will draw the eye of your victim when you leave it in their computer before they arrive in the room.  But this is probably the most annoying gadget I’ve come across recently. You see, there’re a few little switches on the side. One makes caps lock toggle on and off; one makes the mouse pointer move erratically; and the last one type a lot of gobbledygook (side note- gobbledygook is actually in this laptops dictionary- who knew?!). You can also set the duration between each event, so you can do it just infrequently enough that they begin to think something is really wrong with their computer, not that you’re to blame. Even if you are splutter into your coffee behind them.

Of course if you do decide to relive your childhood and cause mayhem next Wednesday, please remember to use this gadget with discretion. It won’t do too much damage (certainly nothing that can’t be undone and it won’t delete anything) but if your chosen prey is doing something incredibly important, its probably not nice to mess with them. Well, not too much anyway…

If you know somone who deserves it, head over to thinkgeek.com and get your own.

  • Did you know, the word gobbledygook was first used by a Texan Lawyer called Maury Maverick, he used it on the 21st May 1944 in the NY Times as part of a complaint about the obscure language used by his colleagues.

I’m sure plenty of people will be thanking you for pointing this little gadget out to their loved ones. Although at least now there will be a reason for my mouse pointer moving erratically ;)

  • You’re just a mine of useful knowledge ain’t you?! I did not know that. :)

  • You’re now honor bound to come back and tell us how it worked!

  • Well, it will probably result in me losing my job, but all in the line of duty, and all that.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
