Scan Toaster: Wear your heart on your toast

If you’re bored with your regular everyday toast with butter and jam, why not bring a bit of culture to the breakfast table with some toast art?scan-usb-toaster

This nifty scan toaster by designer Sung Bae Chang, will transform your plain piece of bread into an art canvass, and the best thing is, you can still eat it.

This toaster is easy to use, as an appliance you need to operate first thing in the morning should be. It doesn’t need an electricity socket to short-circuit as a regular toaster would, but instead will connect to your PC via USB.

Once hooked up, the Scan Toaster will download the design for your piece of toast. It has the ability to download everything from the weather and current time to the latest news headlines. What better way to catch up on the news than by biting into it as you go?

So just how does the latest interest cut make its way onto your Wonder White? Inside the toaster is a network of toasting "modules", which are heated by a hot wire. Once you decide what you want depicted on your toast the modules become aligned and toast the appropriate content onto your bread.

Despite the Electrolux branding, there are no plans for this to hit the mass market, which is a pity as it’s time for kitchen appliances like to toaster to reach a new generation.

  • Geez! What will they think of next? Perhaps this would be the perfect gift for the person that has everything? I wonder if it’s too expensive to mass produce or if they feel there just isn’t enough of a market for something like this? Interesting nonetheless!

  • Hi. I’m from Manila, Philippines and I’m interested in purchasing the scan toaster. Is this available here in Manila? or in Hongkong perhaps. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Regards,

  • Unfortunately the Scan Toaster is only a concept gadget and not for sale. It’s a pity as there is obviously a lot of interest for it!

  • I would easily spend 40 bucks on this…

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
