Do you like the odd computer game? Do you enjoy first person shooters? Did you enjoy the Battlefield series of games? Are you broke? You are? Well today may just be your lucky day!

EA have recently started their next closed beta phase of Battlefield heroes. A more lighthearted approach to the whole FPS genre, and definitely a new approach for the usually realistic Battlefield franchise. The game will be paid for by micro payments for kit that does not effect ability, so you will be able to buy better looking hats that the other guy. Better still, you don’t need to. You can play the whole game for free!

You build a character up from the website, selecting from either the Royal Army or the National Army. You then go on to choose between three classes. Soldier, Gunner, or Commando. Soldiers are good all rounders, Gunners, although slower, can dish out the damage, and Commandos, quick, stealthy, and fragile.

Once you have chosen your class, you can then suit him, and boot him in the garb that is on offer. There is plenty to choose from. Run about in a pair of pants, or cut a dash in a fine suit of khaki. Then pick a weapon or two. And if all that’s not enough, you then get to choose different abilities for your character. These range from being a bit more accurate, or being able to plant the odd explosive, to throwing multiple grenades or even a poison dagger.

Once you are all set, it’s time to go and fight the other side. EA have gone for a cartoon theme for Battlefield Heroes, partly to make it more accessible to a wider range of people, and partly to lessen the load on computers that are a little less capable. The current minimum specs for being able to run the game are a 1.0 Ghz CPU, 512 Mb of RAM (1 Gb for Vista), and a 64 Mb video card with at least pixel shader 2.0 support. So even modest computers should be able to keep up.

Anyway, if any of this tickles your fancy, and you enjoy a good whistle, pop over to the Battlefield Heroes website where you can sign up to the closed beta. And best of all it will be free!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
