In the battle of online social networking sites there has long been one link-sharing site that has dominated with its ability to draw in people to vote on their favourite sites. Digg has been the number one choice for many people needing a fix of random websites to get them through the day, but now it seems that for the first time, Twitter has out dug Digg.

Over the past year Twitter has increased its popularity by over 1000 per cent in the UK. It leaped from its 2008 ranking of 2,953 most popular in the UK, to 291 as of mid-January 2009.

twitter-obamaAmongst the numerous Twitter fans out there is new US President, Barack Obama, and with his popularity on the rise, this endorsement may mean even bigger things for the social networking site. For those skeptical of this, Obama is one of the most followed people on Twitter. Yes we can Twitter.

Digg went through a huge house-clean at the end of last year, banning a number of its users including long-standing top Diggers. This has resulted in many angry voices about Digg’s treatment of its fans and an increase of people to other similar sites such as Mixx and, of course, Twitter.

Facebook still tops the social network site rankings with YouTube second and Bebo and MySpace third and fourth respectively. Twitter ranks in at number 23 on the list.

  • JoeBlow

    Personally…. I mixx it!

  • I’m a big fan of Mixx too- it’s still small enough for there to be some interesting sites without any politics involved in whose submissions go to the top of the rankings.

  • Um…does it matter? Twitter, Digg, YouTube and Facebook are all category leaders. Each serves a different purpose. You can’t compare them.

  • Twitter is gaining a huge popularity all over the world

  • To support the author’s point of view, hoping to see you more new Thank you!

  • Well I use both Digg.com and Twitter however twitter is easier for the average person to get into and see some results than digg. An average Digg user honestly doesn’t have a chance in hell of making it to the front page. So Digg takes I think a greater deal of time and commitment than Twitter.

  • I totally agree with the fact the Digg has gotten too big for ordinary people to join in easily. Twitter is much easier for you to keep in touch with your friends as well so it serves two purposes.

  • I use it to link music on youtube, nearly obsessively in fact. I know a number of people subscribe to my stream specifically to pick up music recommendations.

    Love Twitter to bits.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
