The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, popularly known as the ‘Tube’, is Nokia’s first fully touchscreen phone. It features a 3.2 inch, 16million colour touchscreen display and has an accelerometer for automatic screen rotation. The handset is pretty light, weighing 104grams, with the dimensions 111×51.7×15.5mm.
The quad-band handset is HSDPA 3G and Edge enabled, with WiFi, GPS, A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and USB 2.0. It runs on Symbian 9.4 OS and has an 81MB internal memory, which can be expanded via microSD cards of up to 16GB. Nokia have kindly thrown in an 8GB microSD card.
The 5800 features a 3.2megapixel camera with Carl Ziess optics. It has autofocus, duel LED flash, 3x digital zoom, photo editing and geo-tagging. It records 3GP and MP4 video footage at 30fps.
The li-Ion 1320mAh battery will give you around 9 hours talktime and up to 17 days standby time. And for you music junkies, the 5800 will play your tunes non-stop for 35 hours.
The 5800 is all about the music and you can listen to your tracks through your own headphones via the 3.5mm audio jack, play it out loud through the integrated surround sound speakers (crystal clear hi-fi sound quality with dedicated audio chip). Or, if that’s not loud enough, or you want to share videos with friends and family, you can connect the handset to your telly via the TV-out port.
With the 5800, it’s easy to get to your tunes via a drop-down music bar that will give you access to the phone’s music library. You can also gain access to Nokia’s Music Store via WiFi or mobile internet connections. The 5800’s music player features 8 band graphic equalizer, bass booster, stero widening and loudness, with playlists, audio visualisations and select by artist, album etc. The handset also features an FM radio.
Keep in touch via SMS, MMS, email and instant messaging. As this phone is a complete touch screen, you can navigate either with your fingertip, the included stylus or ‘exclusive plectrum touch’ operation, as well as handwriting recognition or an on-screen keyboard for data input.
Applications include Java MIDP 2.0, Flash Lite 3.0, Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps 2.0, Map Loader alongside games and the usual extras such as tasks, calendar, calculator etc.
It will be available as of 10:00am on January 23rd at Nokia stores in Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and Regent Street in London. And from the end of January, the phone will be available in Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and network operators’ stores. A sim free handset will set you back £249.
Now for those of you online shoppers (a bit like myself) you could pre-order the handset online. However, Nokia have warned that by doing so, shoppers will not receive the phone until February. Why? Who knows!
The handset comes in blue and red – check it out at the Nokia Store now!
