Wii beats the PS3 7 months in a row (in Japan)

It seems that the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Playstation 3 has done nothing to stop the rampaging Wii, having beaten the console made by Sony in the sales war for 7 consecutive months now.

With sales figures of 235,990 units to the Sony's 129,494 it seems that Nintendo are going from strength to strength. Plus it shows that power is not always a good thing.

  • Am i not right in thinking that the PS3 was designed with a 10 year life cycle? Ok, the Wii may be kicking the PS3’s backside at the moment, but in a couple of years time it will have to be replaced. Whereas the PS3 has so much technology, the majority which hasn’t been fully exploited, that it’ll still be going strong in 5 years time. I’m sure Sony will evenbtually make a killing on the PS3.

  • Hi Suheal,

This is a vaild point, however Sony are losing alot of money for each console it sells. I think that last recorded amount was upto the $3 billion mark so far.

But you can turn around to me and say ‘sure but they make more money back on the games’ and you would be right, if it was not for the fact that Microsoft have got the rights to alot of the title that were suppose to be on the Sony machine.

This arguement could go on for a long time lol so i’ll get back to the point, in the end it seems that the ‘weaker’ console on the market is the one making more money. Now in the business world most people would settle for a product that will generate huge sales figuers in the shortest amount of time possible rather than one which will generate money over a longer period.

My last comment will be this, the Nintendo machine has been given a life span of 5 years, do you not think Nintendo will have learnt from this experance and make thier next machine even better?

  • Wii Wii

Sony is predicting a 10-year product life based on the PS2 phenomena but the sale numbers don’t reflect their optimism. From the beginning MS and Sony have claimed the Wii to be a “FAD” that would die out within it’s first year. Two years and counting and you still can’t buy a Wii console without hunting or paying more than face value for it. None of Sony’s recent “blockbuster” game releases have managed to unseat the Wii from it’s lofty perch and neither will the recent dismal sales performance of HDTV’s. Here it is a few months before the mandated digital changeover and the failed credit market has stalled the sale of all manner of consumer electronics including HDTV’s and their accessories.

The PS3 console and it’s fancy BR player was crushed by the low tech Wii in total worldwide sales. As of Sept.08 the Wii has sold 34.5 million systems worldwide compared to the PS3’s 16.8 million. Wii’s domination also carries over to the unit number of million+ selling titles with 229 million units compared to the PS3 94 million and Xbox’s 70 million. To add insult to injury the 8-year old PS2 has outsold the PS3 by 4 million units for the fiscal year of 2008! Sony’s expensive BR format isn’t driving sales it’s driving customers away! That goes to show you high price high tech doesn’t necessarily translate into consumer interest. If the price point is too steep it doesn’t matter if the system projects holographic images it won’t be adopted very fast (if at all). By all accounts this will be the worst retail season in 40+ years not a good time to be selling high priced tech that one needs. Only 30% of US households even have an HDTV as of Sept.08 many non-adopter don’t intend to upgrade until their old TV set fails this leaves Sony BR with a limited dribbling market of prospective customers for years to come.
