Eco-Friendly Gadget: Wattson Energy Monitor

So by now I reckon we've all seen quite a few eco friendly and solar powered gadgets, created in a quest to save the future of our planet.  Well here's another, the Wattson Energy Monitor.  Yet another environmentally friendly gizmo to help you do your bit for the planet.  A waste of money perhaps?  You decide… 

The package consists of the Wattson - a wireless energy monitor and a senor clip transmitter.

The sensor clip simply attaches to one of the mains cables leading to your fuse box.  It then transmits information about your energy usage to the Wattson monitor.

The Wattson then calculates the data into either watts or shows how much money your usage is costing you.  This is then showed on the LED display.

The Wattson emits a mellow glow depending on your energy usage; blue for below average usage, purple for average and red for above average.

The Wattson is wireless and can be situation anywhere within a 30 mile radius of the transmitter. 

The Wattson stores up to 28 days worth of data concerning your electricity usage on its internal 32kb memory.  It can be connected to your computer via USB and following download of the 'Holmes' software, you can chart your energy savings and even compare them with other Wattson users.

So, an eco-friendly gadget that uses yet more energy?  Well, the wireless unit uses a rechargeable battery that only uses a mere 5 watts of power.  The transmitter uses 4xAA batteries.

The Wattson Energy Monitor will set you back £99.99.  In light of the credit crunch, do we really want to be spending a hundred pound on something that tells us how much money we're losing via our electricity usage?

  • I think I might have mentioned this on some posts here before – it’s a great idea. Comparing it with other people is a great idea as it means you can work out what you should be using. Having seen the guys behind it speak they’re very smart. They tried doing a version for gas but couldn’t get the permission from the government to make their own special meters.
