The best thing about remote control cars is that you can make them do things that you wouldn’t even dream of doing in a real car. Things like driving so fast up a steep hill that your car flips over backwards, precariously balances itself on its bonnet for a minute, and without a scratch speeds off into the distance. The only downside with a traditional remote control car is that you're not even a backseat driver, you're an outside driver. Well, it looks as though that’s all about to change, with the new VTS (Vision Tracking System) Camera Car allowing you to literally take the driver’s seat.
What makes this an amazing remote control car is that by wearing a headset while controlling your car, you can actually see from the perspective of the cockpit. To make the experience even more realistic, when you turn your head left, right up or down, the image responds accordingly, meaning there's now no excuse for you to not do a shoulder check in your tiny car.
The car works by wirelessly broadcasting a VGA video stream to the LCD goggles. Granted the goggles aren’t the most discreet headwear, but who cares when you're the one who can see a view you only would otherwise if you were 3 inches tall?
The headset also provides full stereo sound showing us that the makers haven't left anything out in giving you that real driving feel. That does mean however, that your 4-year-old nephew will be out of a job in making "broom broom" sounds next to you as you career your car into a sand pit.
The VTS Camera Car is available for £599.95 from Red5 and unsurprisingly, has been so popular that they are currently only taking pre-orders as these cars zoom out the door.

This has to be the coolest gadget I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s almost like a little virtual video game. Red5 did not leave anything out with this little car….first-person view, audio, making me a kid again! Can I pre-order 50?!
I completly agree, I really need to get hold of one of these bad boys, I loved my remote control cars when I was younger (I had all sorts) but this adds a whole new dimention of fun. Its very cool….
The footage from the viewpoint of the cockpit really just looks like fun. There’s no way I’d want a normal remote control car after this.
Who needs to pay to drive a Ferrari on a Formula One style race course for half an hour when this camera car can instead give you endless hours of fun!
Awesome! Want One.
Obviously it is not a gadget! Very old idea, easily DIY-ed at much much lesser cost.
Does anyone know of anywhere, Uk or overseas, where I can get hold of these?
Red 5 (UK distributor) tells me they wont be getting them in again.. Any ideas?
