Wondered why your computer is lagging? Downloads taking too long? then worry no more because web firms that cover 95% of the UK’s broadband, have penned themselves to a scheme which comes into force tomorrow. The scheme, which saw web firms, voluntarily sign their names to a more “honest,” approach in delivering the correct speeds. Now, what this means is, if you pay for an internet connection, which clearly states 2mb bandwidth speeds, and then you want to be getting that speed, correct? Well, ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) have been dishonest when it came to broadband, and actually lowered their speeds, to make you think your getting what you paid for. Ofcom, will monitor the web firms, to make sure they stick by their guns in delivering their word.

After all this time, the ISP’s had sat at their desk, making hidden cuts and reaping the rewards, but if you think they have got off lightly, your mistaken. They have their work cut out, as they have to follow a code of conduct, this means:

  • Give users an accurate reading of what their line can support and what speed it is running at.
  • Give advice to users to see how they can combat technical issues, which could affect their line and omit slow speeds.
  • Downgrade a customer's service at no penalty, if the lines are lower than originally anticipated.

Just in case this is not enough concrete evidence, in securing your lines speeds check out www.speedtest.net.

  • This scheme is well over due- there has been a lot of media attention about slow broadband speeds for yonks- I’m really glad something is actually changing for us consumers!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
