The Retrieva Sat Nav Dog Collar, “Here Fido!”

I've often thought that although gadgets make life easier for humans, they really should also extend to other creatures like our lovable pooches. So when I heard about the Retrieva Sat Nav dog collar I thought this would be a perfect way to show our furry little loved ones we care about them.

Gone are the days of that hole in the fence scenario as Fido escapes to chase some highly appealing tail-lights down the street leaving a sad and lonely hole in the family. The Retrieva dog collar has a portable GPS tracking device meaning that you can now know exactly how far and where his meaty bites have powered him off to.

Dogs who stray out of the pre-set area will alert a central server and a text message will be sent to your mobile. The system uses a combination of satellite, telecom and radio tracking technologies, so there's no chance of your four-legged Houdini escaping this time.

The Retrieva can also be used to track any stolen dogs, which is a crime that has been on the rise as of late. The collar itself is made from anti-cut material, and is smart enough to send you a text message if anyone tries to break it.

The unit is powered by a rechargeable battery, and lets you know (yes, you guessed it- via a text message) when it needs to be recharged. If the collar is on hibernate and set to report its location only when the dog is lost, the battery life should extend to three weeks.

While the collar can be adjusted for any size dog, there will be a Retrieva harness available later this year, designed for very small dogs and still with the same tracking features as the original Retrieva. This means that the annoying, yappy Chihuahua across the road will never get lost again. Excellent(!)

While this device is predominantly a dog collar, there are other ingenious uses for it as an anti-theft device for your motorbike, laptop and even your boat (the one you keep in your private marina).

If you like the sound of this GPS collar but are not entirely convinced, the people over at Retrieva are offering a lease-system however, you must commit to a 12 month contract.

The collar is due to go on sale next month and is expected to cost £200. To me, this sounds like a better investment than yet another roll of stylish chicken wire around the base of your fence.

  • This is a brilliant use of the technology. Especially now as in the UK a new directive prohibits the use of RF collars that give a mild electric shock when a dog appoaches a set boundary.

I use the Retrieva dog collar and have done since it came onto the market.

My dog is a very important part of my family. Anything I am able to do to safe guard him whether it is to find him should he get lost or have him returned should he be stolen. Is of paramount importance to me.

I can honestly say this collar is one of the best things I have bought, to have a more relaxed and enjoyable time with my dog.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
