Review: Edifier MP300 Plus Multimedia Speaker

[product#58]

Overview

I jumped at the chance to review this speaker system. No, not because I'm sad and have no life (really) but purely because the sound that comes from my new laptop can completely ruin my favourite songs. Now I know my little notebook has the potential, it just needed a helping hand to release its inner beast!

Review:

So firstly this carry case for transportation… well, that made me laugh a little. Transportation? The carry case has no handle! What are you supposed to do, hook it under your arm? Anyway, I just had to get that bit out of the way. Now we can concentrate on the rest.

This was the hardest review to do. Nothing to do with the product, may I add. But reviewing it meant I had to listen to my music. Music is my drug; it gives me a natural high, so I spent the majority of the evening singing my heart out!

Firstly I tried the speakers out with my laptop. Now initially there were a few 'glitches' in the sound quality. Almost like the connection kept dropping. But as I used the speakers more over the next few days, I didn't notice any further 'glitches'.

Next I tried the speakers out with my mobile. The majority of songs had a crystal clear sound quality with excellent bass. However at times, and with certain tracks the speakers seemed a little 'rattly'. (Maybe it's my dodgy downloads!?) Overall though, I was really impressed with the sound quality.

The bass is really powerful for such a small set of speakers. But there's no way to turn it down. Which wouldn't be a problem, if I didn't have to pass mum's "that-bass-is-booming-down-here" test!

Now I played my tunes through Windows Media Player, on a default sound mode, no extra bass or SRS wow effects. When I turned on the SRS wow effects, well, that's one sure way of upping the bass if it's not enough for you already. Just grab your mother some ear plugs!

The set up was simple enough. Plug all the wires in the right places (you can't go wrong) connect them to a power supply, then connect to your laptop, mp3 player etc and you're sorted!

What you see is pretty much what you get with these speakers. No screens displaying your tracks, but then again, didn't you choose the track from your laptop or mp3 player?! So surely you'd know what you chose, right?

The set-up includes spherical satellite speakers, one of which has two tiny, silver buttons on the top; the volume up and down buttons. And the subwoofer is brush-finished aluminium.

We Say

Priced at £49.99, I reckon these speakers are great value for money. Where all the wires can look a tad messy, the speakers are easy to set up and use and they provide an excellent bass and top sound quality.

The Gaj-It Verdict:

Design: 7/10
Usability: 9/10
Features: 7/10
Value: 9/10

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
