Microsoft Pulls the Plug on OneCare

Microsoft have also announced it will stop selling OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC management service, from 30 June 2009. The move to change the way Microsoft provides security comes as OneCare sales drop thanks to big-name players in the anti-virus world such as Symantec and McAfee.

Instead, the company has announced that it will offer a free anti-virus and security solution from the second half of 2009; perfect news for all of us trying to save money in turbulent financial times.

The new software will be free to download and is currently code-named Morro. It is designed to be a basic programme aimed at smaller or less powerful computers. Morro will support Windows XP, Vista and the new Windows 7.

Microsoft said in a statement that Morro would be designed specifically to be a small-footprint program that uses fewer system resources. This would be ideal for users with low-bandwidth connections or computers without much processing power.

With low-powered netbook computers set for big sales next year thanks to advanced technology, Morro will be perfectly placed to securitise these laptops.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
