Stufflive: Mechanical remote control robot from IWOOT!

It was late in the day when we came to the I Want One Of Those (IWOOT) stalls but boy oh boy, did we come across a little treat!

Officially described as a mechanical, expandable, remote control robot; we only got to have a quick play with the RC wonder-bot but we were definitely impressed. It’s capable of seemingly endless intricate moves and dances and the unit itself bears more than a passing resemblance to a Transformer - which is naturally pretty cool!

The robot comes attached to a remote control unit with various different buttons but as we approached we were expecting radio controlled in the more traditional sense, as in, press a button or move a joystick and the robot responds by performing that action. In this instance though, the bot comes with software that you install on a PC and from there you design and create your own moves and dances. Once you’re happy with your routines you simply connect up the break dance-happy little fella and away you go!

There were quite a few buttons on the controller so you have plenty of options to create different routines and store them all at once, then all it takes to make him bust-a-groove is one press of the appropriate button. The one we saw on display was set to run through EVERY routine at the press of a button - how cool is that! Don’t worry though he’s ready to go straight from the box with over 100 pre-set routines.

We’re not really sure in what way it is expandable and retailing for £399 means the price is a little prohibitive for the average stocking filler but what can we say, we have a weakness for robots!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
