HTC to Close Their Cloud Backup Service HTCSense.com

HTC customers that use HTC's cloud-based backup service, HTCSense.com, should download a backup of their contacts, messages and call history as HTC is shutting down the service while it performs some upgrades.

The Taiwanese-based company is notifying customers that their data will be deleted while they upgrade the service - if you use the service they suggest that you download the data as a zip before its removed on April 30.

“HTCSense.com is undergoing a renovation to improve the services and value we deliver to customers like you,” said HTC.

“If you have been using HTCSense.com to sync your contacts, messages, Footprints or call history, you can download your data through 30 April. After 30 April, your data will no longer be accessible and will be deleted.”

It's unclear why the data will be deleted or what improvements will be made to the system - but it might be the case that the update will mean this unusual situation doesn't happen again.

HTC is obvious apologetic for the upheaval and said: "We apologise for any inconvience" and went on to say that as soon they know when the new service is back up they will let their customer know.

As well as not giving any information on improvement HTC are a bit wooly with regards to when the service will be back up and running smoothly.

Considering HTC are about to release their new flagship quad-core handset, the HTC One X, which is due for release by the end of the year, it shouldn’t be too long as the new handset will be running the Sense user interface apposed to Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich UI.

Rumours suggest that HTC is looking to improve their cloud services as they have signed deals with some major players in storage (Dropbox), mobile data (Dashwire) and TV services (Intertrust/SyncTV).

What ever happens to HTCSense.com - it's sure to be back online better than ever - so it's not all bad news. Sure, the abruptness of the transition may have ruffled a few feathers, but it could all be worth it if HTC delivers what were hoping they will.
