Videogames generally get bad rap, but here is a new study conducted by McMaster University in Canada. The study suggests that videogames can give more than just entertainment. Apparently, playing videogames is beneficial to people suffering from a special type of eye disorder. The study involved volunteers playing Medal of Honor for about 40 hours in a month. The gaming sessions were broken down to daily sessions, five days a week. About 83 percent of the participants showed discerning difference in their eyesight.
Daphne Maurer, head of the project, said, "I think it tells us that the visual nervous system is still plastic enough to either form or reveal connections in adulthood"¦ and we suspect that might be true for any kind of visual defect." The team studied people born with a rare form of cataract. This ailment means that sufferer lose their normal vision between the age of three and 10 months. The team noted, "About two-thirds of the things we measured improved simply from playing an action videogame."
The team said that it faced some problem in convincing non-gaming patients to start playing games. However, the team is now working on creating special purpose video game. The game will be based on Medal of Honor but would add some more elements. So, now that you have got scientists' approval, go ahead and play to your heart's content.
