Downside of Facebook: Cited in One-Third Divorce Cases in UK

Facebook is meant to connect you with your loved or not so loved ones, but since every rose has its thorns, then so does Facebook. The social networking, meant to connect people, is also causing rift between them. According to a new report, Facebook was listed in one-third of divorce petitions filed in the country in 2011. In 2009, the social networking site was listed in 19 percent of the divorce cases. The report has been put together by Divorce-Online, a divorce related website.

The report has also listed the various ways in which the social networking site has been used by warring couples. The top three reasons are inappropriate messages to members of the opposite sex”, “separated spouses posting comments about each other”, and “Facebook friends reporting spouse's behaviour”. Ironically, another social networking site Twitter was mentioned only in 0.4 percent of the divorce cases filed in e011.

The stats highlight the need of moderate disclosure of your personal life on internet boards. Mark Keenan of Divorce-Online, said, "People need to be careful what they put on Facebook as the courts are now seeing a lot more evidence being introduced from people’s walls and posts in disputes over finances and children.” The survey was conducted using 5,000 divorce petitions.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
