Apple may be known for its super cool devices, but the company gets much-deserved bad rep for the lack of social ethical values. While, it gets constant brickbats for labor exploitation, the company also has the dubious status of being the least green company out of all the major tech companies. However, the Cupertino company is now looking to do some damage control. It is being reported that the company will start using solar power for powering up its east coast data center. Currently, it is using coal for this purpose.
Apple is currently in the process of building a solar farm near its data center. the news about the solar farm leaked out when the residents of the town of Maiden complained about the smoke produced by the burning of wood. After public protest, Apple used mulchers for clearing the land. Town of Maiden is in the state of North Carolina, which is fast becoming popular among the tech companies for the purpose of setting up data centers. Since these data centers are real energy hogs, cheaper electricity rates in North Carolina become very attractive to tech companies.
Greenpeace issues an annual report about the energy usage by the companies. The organization, however, complains about the secrecy maintained by the tech companies about their energy usage and its environmental impact.
