Google is now taking a crack at traditional TV with its YouTube original programming. It had long been speculated that Google would eventually be turning YouTube into a repository of exclusive programming and looks like the internet search giant is now actually moving into that direction. The company is now going to create a couple of dozens of channels which will broadcast original content. In the meantime, you will still get to watch your favorite kitty and puppy videos.
YouTube is collaborating with big names like Amy Poehler, Sofia Vergara, Ashton Kutcher and Jay-Z. Though, the company has landed a deal with only one movie and television studio that is Lionsgate. According to Robert Kyncl, YouTube's global head of content partnerships, "The Web is bringing us entertainment from an even wider range of talented producers, and many of the defining channels of the next generation are being born, and watched, on YouTube."
The initial plan is to create approximately 25 hours of original programming daily. Google is now looking to challenge traditional cable TV with its latest endeavor. It also is a logical step forward for one the world's most popular sites. YouTube gets more eyeballs than any other site, but it yet has to find ways to monetize its offerings. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has apparently splashed out more than $100 million on getting the exclusive producers for generating content. It will also be sharing the advertising revenue with the producers on 50-50 basis.
