Despite updates, Internet Explorer is on the downward trajectory and is losing market share rapidly, while Google Chrome is maintaining its upward streak. According to Chitika Insights, a research firm, Firefox, Safari and Chrome are all gaining market share. Safari now commands 9 percent of the browser market, up one point from its tally in July 2011. Firefox has also increased its market share to 20 percent during this period. Firefox had 19 percent market share in July 2011.
Microsoft lost 2 percent market share between July, 2011 and August 2011 but it kept its market share steady between July 2010 and July 2011 at 56 percent. IE's market share stood at 54 percent in August, 2011. However, the biggest increase in market share was in Google Chrome's favor, which now commands 16 percent market share, up from 9 percent in July, 2010.
Google gained market share by chipping away at Firefox and Safari's share in the pie. Both the browsers lost market share in this time period. During the twelve months period between July, 2010 and July 2011, Firefox's market share declined 5 percent while Safari lost 1 percent share. Bothe the browsers, however, succeeded in stemming the decline and gained during July and August, 2011 time period. Analysts expect that Firefox may gain a couple of more points due to its frequent updates. Microsoft is also likely to consolidate its position after the release of Internet Explorer 10 and Windows 8.
