Samsung is going to go ahead with its 8.9 inch tablet and would be launching the contraption in the US on October 2. The tablet will come at a price tag of $469, slightly lower than entry level 10.1 inch Wi-Fi only iPad 2. The 32GB version of the tablet has been priced at $569.
The 8.9 inch tab comes with dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 T250S processor. The tablet will have Gorilla glass screen which is capable of handling 1280×800 pixel resolution. It will also have dual camera with 3MP rear camera and 2 MP camera on the front. The tablet is impressively thin at 8.6mm. While it runs on Android Honeycomb, but it has layered the operating system with its proprietary TouchWiz® UX, which features Mini Mode Tray, Live Panel and Indicator Quick Panel. The skin also offers advance copy and paste features which let you conveniently store webpages, YouTube links and photos.
While Galaxy 8.9 definitely has some impressive features, but there is no feature which is not available in iPad 2. The pricing of this tablet is surprising as without any USP, it has undercut iPad 2 by merely $30, while at the same time, the tablet is considerably smaller than iPad 2. Looks like Samsung has not learnt any lessons from other Android tablet makers which premium priced their products, only to see them failing miserably.
Additionally, Samsung will also be launching its 'would be iPod Killers' aka Galaxy Playerâ„¢ 5.0 and 4.0. These players will come with 4 inch and 5 inch screen and would run Android 2.3.5. Galaxy Player 5.0 has been priced at $269, while 4 inch player carries a price tag of $229.
