HP TouchPad may have met a sad end but a few lucky ones, who managed to snag deep discounted tablet can rejoice, yet again. Despite the fact that HP decided to discontinue its tablet line, TouchPad is not exactly an orphaned tablet and is now slated to get an Over The Air update which will add to the tablet's functionality. The move also shows that HP is not dumping WebOS altogether, at least not for the time being.
An HP spokesperson confirmed the news stating, "We expect that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog.” However, the company has not provided any release date. It also did not provide information about the likely tweaks and changes to be brought about by the update.
HP's fire sale proved to be pretty successful. The company noted that it experienced massive increase in activation. It also reported five times higher application download volume. The inventory at most of the stores sold out in a matter of hours. Apart from the OTA update, HP also released a pack of six new apps for TouchPad. This pack includes games like FlightPredictor HD and Angry Birds Rio HD. Apart from this, it also received a free Quickoffice update, which added editing capabilities for Microsoft office apps like Word and Excel.
With all these updates and freebies, it looks like HP is doing its best to assuage its customers that they won't be abandoned with their $99 tablets.
