Google-Motorola Deal may Prompt Apple to Make Similar Purchase

While the market is still trying to make sense of Google's latest shopping spree, it looks like that its competitors are also gearing up to retaliate in the most aggressive way imaginable. So far, the consensus is that Google-Motorola engagement will hurt fortunes of Apple and Microsoft, but we will have to wait for some time to see if it actually happens this way. However, in the short term, we may get to see similar high profile acquisitions by Microsoft and Apple as well. Let's not forget that Apple has plenty of idle cash lying around. In the aftermath of Google-Motorola tie-up, Nokia and RIM have emerged as very attractive acquisition targets. Some prominent research firms such as Jefferies & Co. have suggested that Apple may also snap some major company for boosting its already very strong patent portfolio. Jefferies also threw the name of InterDigital in the ring. Apple may be interested in this company too. Nokia may be another potential target for Apple. The Cupertino company is already paying hefty fees to Nokia for cross-licensing deals. Apple, with its cash stash worth $76.2 billion, can easily afford to buy Nokia, thus cutting the recurring cost of paying royalties to the Finnish company. However, Apple is tight lipped about its reaction towards Google-Motorola deal. Google has openly accused Apple and Microsoft of being uncompetitive. He said that the Motorola deal was mainly prompted by the various lawsuits filed against Android.
