A couple of pictures have appeared on Apple blog 9to5Mac which apparently show-off a prototype of the new iPhone 5. But the prototype appears to be in an iPhone 4 case.

The phone is sporting the same fairly average 5-mega-pixel camera and is running a version of test software that is usually the preserve of prototype models.

There's no evidence to say that this isn't a just a picture of a standard iPhone 4. But the report suggests that the prototype is running the new A5 processor.

If it’s real Apple seems to have learnt a lesson from previous leaks and might be testing the new phone in iPhone 4 cases - just in case the phone falls into the wrong hands again.

If this is a prototype it does lead us to believe the 4S is likely to be the next iPhone - sporting a few changes from the last phone and not the overhaul we'd all hoped for.

Other news over the weekend also points to this, as reports suggested that Apple are having issues with overheating with the dual-core A5 processor claimed by a report from Chinese news outlet Sohu.

The A5 chip has been powering the iPad 2 without problems since March, but the new iPhone 5"²s "thinner and lighter" design is causing cooling problems for the chip, say sources speaking to Sohu.

But this isn’t the case for any dual-core Android phones. And if it is true they could just clock the chip down to solve the problem. Afterall the iPad 2 is incredibly thin – so overheating on the iPhone 5 does seem a little far-fetched.

The delay doesn't mean a new iPhone won't be released this fall. It’s thought that Apple will release the much muted  iPhone 4S, an upgraded edition of the previous-gen iPhone 4 released in the summer of 2010.

Sohu claims that the  upgrades coming to the iPhone 4S will include an 8-mega-pixel camera, gorilla-glass screen, and a dual-core version of the previous-gen A4 chip to give the new phone a speed bump.

What do you think of this latest theory – is Apple going to go for an iPhone 4S or a proper full bells and whistles iPhone 5? Let us know below.
