Pope Goes Tweeting: Give a Religious Touch to Your Social Network

Religion and technology make for strange bed fellows, but looks like nobody can escape the hard reality that tech is the way to go. So, the latest entrant in the arena is Pope Benedict XVI. No, he is not going to create new software or design new It phone, but Pope has now taken to tweeting. In a first, Pope Benedict sent out his first tweet, announcing the launch of a new church website, News.va. The gadget of choice for Pope was iPad 2. A year earlier, who would have thought that a gadget mocked for its moniker would go such places.

Pope Benedict used Vatican new Twitter account for sending out his first 40 characters long missive. If you are religiously inclined or just want to redeem your daily sins, you can follow the account for getting latest information about new Papal developments, articles and features. The new website is currently available in English and Italian but Vatican is planning to add more languages in the near future.

This is a big leap for Pope who earlier this year had proclaimed that internet causes "sense of solitude and disorientation". All in all, Pope was not very warm towards technology in general and internet in particular. However, later he also lauded internet for opening up multitude of opportunities. Well, he did send out a couple of mixed messages but nothing had prepared us for tweets from the Pope. We don't know what led to the change of heart, but could it be the allure of iPad2?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
