With Google continuing the quest for world domination it's obvious that we're going to see some failures along with all the success stories. They've got the monopoly on smartphones, email, advertisement, search, maps, online art and books, internet browsers; to name a few. They're power stretches far beyond their homepage into all aspects of modern life. Unfortunately for them, they've failed to capture some of the profits from two huge markets; health and energy. I'm not blindly admiring the big G but they had some good ideas with Google Health and GooglePower Meter.
If you haven't heard of them, which you probably haven't, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this article, Google Health is an online health journal, where you go to keep track of your health, weight, and all that type of Wii Health stuff as well as providing a hub of medical information. PowerMeter was the same thing, but for your energy use. I.e. an online record of the electricity your house munches. Neither were ground-breaking, but neither were flawed.
It's proof that the online industry is vicious even for the biggest companies out there. They can't really on their name to get success. The internet demands high-quality, high-originality and that extra bit that you can't put your finger on, the tech-X-factor if you like.
RIP Google Health and PowerMeter you just didn't have it.
