Once a formidable tech company, Microsoft is increasingly becoming dependent on Xbox for avoiding getting pushed into the oblivion. However, we got to give the credit where it is due. Xbox is definitely performing its part well. Microsoft recently announced that it has sold 55 million units of the game console and that in the process, it has set up the record for being the most successful gaming contraption. This is a time for Microsoft to celebrate, whereas its competitor Sony is working its behind off to get its PlayStation Network back on track.
Generally, as a product advances in age, you expect its sales volume to stagnate and then taper off, but this is where Xbox defied the established laws. Into its 5th and 6th year, the console saw a revival in its fortune, largely thanks to the improvement and innovation in Kinect technology. The console is also a global success and is being sold in 38 countries across the globe. Though, some may argue that Xbox is mainly popular in the US market only and gets beaten down by Asian competitors in overseas markets.
Microsoft's Windows may be losing ground, and its mobile operating system never quite took off, but Xbox 360 saw 29 percent year over year increase in its sales during the first four months of the year. It also maintained its spot as the top selling game console in the US for 2011. So, now the count of Xbox Live users worldwide is about 35 million and so far, they have not suffered any major security breach accident. These users are also logging about 60 hours per month on their consoles, which is an impressive feat.
However, the story may get a little better for Xbox Live, as the company is rumored to be ready to announce IPTV service for the console at E3. Keep watching this space for latest update.
