Asus Formally Launches Tablet/Phone Hybrid PadFone

Computex 2011 is underway and Asus has made quite a splash with its elegant tablet/phone hybrid device. As you can see, unlike its name, the device itself is breathtakingly beautiful. Not only aesthetics, it has equally impressive tech specs as well. The device basically consists of a 4-inch handset and a 10.1 inch tablet. The smartphone is designed to nestle into the tablet and it does this quite beautifully.

The tablet itself comes with 1280 x 800 resolution and has an independent battery which may be used for recharging the phone. The device is an example of symbiotic relationship where you can tether your tablet to your phone for using 3G services. This would mean that you do not need two separate SIMs for your tablet and phone. It will also save the hassle and expenses of signing up for secondary data contract. The tablet features one front facing camera whereas the phone is equipped with two cameras. Its rear camera is 5 MP strong.

Asus is stressing that the device will provide 'seamless' functionality and phone apps will be scaled to tablet dimensions. If you have docked the phone to the tablet and you receive a call then you have the option of removing the phone from the dock for attending the call. Otherwise, you may simply keep using the phone and respond to the call using Bluetooth headset.

PadFone looks all shiny and bright but Asus stated that it has yet to finalize the hardware configuration. The company also did not provide any information about the pricing of the hybrid device. No word on availability as well. The device seems to be inspired by Motorola Atrix, so we expect the pricing to be in the same area. You might want to start a little piggy bank for buying this contraption.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
