US Trails Behind in Broadband Adoption and Speed

Well, weekend seems like the perfect time to read up all the research reports generated throughout the week. FCC has published its latest report about the broadband penetration in various countries and has found that the USA is lagging behind in broadband revolution. The country has been placed ninth, out of 29 countries, in terms of mobile broadband adoption per capita. Its abysmal performance continues in fixed wireless segment as well, where it is ranked 12th out of 33 countries. United Kingdom has been placed at No. 9 in terms of households with Broadband access.

Federal Communications Commission is looking to increase the broadband penetration by making its affordable. The commission had presented its recommendations last year in the form of National Broadband Plan. One of the areas which need proper attention is the broadband speed. In New York, you can get an average download speed of 11.7 Mbps, however, it pales in comparison to Seoul, which is able to provide its 10 million residents whopping 35.8 Mbps surfing speed. If you happened to be in Olympia, Washington, then you can cruise internet at 21 Mbps, which is the fastest speed in the US. Seattle tied with New York City for the second spot.

Another report released by Federal Communications Commission also stated that about 26 Million Americans do not have broadband access, and another 1/3rd of the users with access actually do not subscribe for the services due to higher costs.

The report will be presented to the Congress and is expected to start a blame game between government and private sector. USTelecom, the broadband trade association, already issued a statement claiming that "the private sector is doing its part."
