Amazon boss Jeff Bezos recently talked about his company's plans to make a foray into tablet and smartphone segment. Though he was a bit cryptic with his "Stay tuned" comment, there are quite a few rumors doing rounds. Amazon tablets are likely to be manufactured by Samsung.
Amazon is already spreading its tentacles far and wide, so a tablet should not come as a surprise. With its new Unbox movie streaming service, launching a tablet now makes even more sense. Couple it with Amazon's cloud service and e-book market, and the e-retail giant already has the entire ecosystem in place. What else, the company now has its own app store as well and thus it is more likely to that any upcoming Amazon device will be Android powered.
Amazon's Kindle has already proved to be a big fillip for the company. According to some reports, the company's latest offering in the form of ad-supported e-reader has been warmly welcomed by the masses. The success of the e-book reader shows that Amazon is fully capable of delivering goods where it matters most. The retail giant should not have any problem marketing the product either. Amazon is likely to come with 7 inch and 9.7 inch tablets, but would not be positioned to cannibalize Kindle. In Bezos' own words, "We will always be very mindful that we will want a dedicated reading device."
Amazon tablets are rumored to be launched either this summer or by the holiday season later in the year. Either way, just 'stay tuned'.
