If you've never heard of Minecraft then you must get involved and have a go. There's a free version and the full version is at a discounted price at the moment. Oh and for those of you who do check it out, I'm sorry I can't afford compensation if it takes over your life. For those not in the know, it's the latest in a long line of internet fads from Habo, to WOW to second life. This geeky game allows you to mine (hence the name) materials from a randomly generated landscape and build whatever you like and I mean whatever and just to make it a bit more interesting, at night (and also underground) horrible things come out! Zombies, spiders, creepers (dubiously shaped things which chase you and blow you to bits.) The internet does not get much more fun than that.

Eventually the creator plans to add an actual goal to the game so all your building and surviving serves some purpose but at the moment all the cool kids are collecting obsidian so they can build portals to Hell.

Introductory rant over, there's been an exciting update to the game. Version 1.6 will mostly be about bug fixes (as most updates to anything are.) But a new addition to the world of Minecraft will come with this update. Mapping. Your crafted maps will centre on the area where you originally create it, and will gradually fill in as you explore your surroundings. Reach the edge of the parchment and the map will stop updating. Plus, the upcoming "cloning" feature means that two people can hold the same map and see real-time blinking dots to indicate their position. It doesn't sound exciting does it? But trust me it will provide a lot of fun.

  • These maps were pretty good but there are user made ones that are pretty good now.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
