In a surprising move today Nintendo has confirmed rumours that they are going to release a new console, and has said that it will be playable at this year’s E3.
There aren't any technical details to speak of, but it's thought it will be similar to Microsoft's own IBM chipset, running three cores, but will have substantially quicker clock speeds.
The original Wii proved a runaway hit for Nintendo when it launched five years ago.
However, sales have been gradually declining in the face of tough competition from PlayStation, XBox 360 and mobile gaming platforms.
In the past year, Microsoft has introduced its Kinect system for XBox, while Sony launched PlayStation Move.
Nintendo’s chief executive, Satoru Iwata suggested that his company was preparing a fresh innovation.
“It will offer a new way of playing games within the home,” he said.
The revelation came in an official statement from the company as it released its 2010/11 earnings figures. The announcement is vital as Nintendo reported a 66% slump in its annual net profit, the second fall in two years"¦
Nintendo says the huge profit drop is down to the strong yen and a Nintendo DS price cut. The figures do not include the bulk of the company's recent [Nintendo Nintendo 3DS review") sales.
The unnamed Nintendo Wii successor is rumoured to featured a touchscreen controller and more power than the Xbox 360 and PS3.
