This is just the cutest thing! Ever wanted your own baby dinosaur? Well for now, that’s not going to happen. Unless scientists do the whole 'Jurassic Park' thing. So for now, here's the next best thing. It's Pleo!

Pleo is a robotic dinosaur. He resembles a week old baby Camarasaurus, right down to the weight, size and detailed behaviours. Pleo begins his life as a newly hatched baby Camarasaurus. When he first awakens, he attempts a stretch and tries to adjust to the light. Stay near, you'll be his parent and he will soon notice you and toddle over to explore.

Pleo is an inquisitive baby and will plod along at a leisurely pace, swaying his tail and exploring his surroundings. He explores his environment through his senses.

He will develop his own individual personality and will establish a bond with you. He loves to be cuddled and nurtured and if you stroke down his spine, he will arch his back in enjoyment. This is great if he is sad or over excited and needs calming down.

He has a wide repertoire of noises and gestures, hooting and honking in excitement, crying and whimpering if he is scared or lonely. When he is hungry, he may stomp his feet to let you know that he wants food. When he is feeling sleepy, he becomes drowsy and settles down to sleep.

He will change his mind and mood whenever he feels and becomes easily distracted, so feelings of hunger or fatigue are pushed to one side when Pleo senses something interesting.

Feed Pleo his leaf is he is hungry. If he isn't hungry, Pleo will start to play tug of war with you and you can gently try tugging the leaf back to play.

Two or more Pleos will recognise each other (a bit like Furbeys!). But if your baby Pleo starts to sneeze, then he's caught a cold from one of the others!

So, there you go. That's the cuteness! Now for the science!

Pleo learns from his experiences and environment through artificial intelligence.

He has touch sensors on his chin, legs, shoulders, rear and his head. He also has ground sensors, tilt and shake sensors and force feedback sensors.

He has a front and rear speaker, a colour camera, binaural microphones and an infrared interrupter. He uses IR communication and is powered by a NiMH rechargeable battery.

  • I got my daughter one of these last year, they are great little things and hers still works. The dog still barks at it to this day and it is quite funny when it walks upto the dog and makes one of its weird noises, the dog starts to bark and jump around which has us all in stitches. Its unbelievable how much enjoyment can be gotten from this toy, almost a year on and she still plays with it almost everyday…. Just cant wait to see what the next toy ugobe bring out.

  • I wish I had one of these when I was kid, now that would have been so cool – I had to make do with a programmable Big-Trak remote vehicle thing! :)

  • we have these now in the uk, just bought my 2 daughters these for xmas…hope i have done the right thing…

bought them from these guys if anyone is interested they were very helpful, nice to speak to someone on the phone..

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
