Samsung are going to upgrade the processing power behind its new Samsung Galaxy s2 – but will this mean that they have to delay the highly anticipated android smartphone?
They are holding back the handset to add a faster CPU and GPU to an already impressive handset which is now thought to be released in late May, rather than a late April release.
It was originally meant to be coming with a 1GHZ processor, but they have decided that just isn't snappy enough so they are going to add some more oomph to it.
Their Estonia office, yes they have offices in Estonia, confirmed on their Facebook page that they would be upgrading the CPU and GPU to 1.2GHZ, That update brings the Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II to the top of the Cortex-A9 class, in pure computing power, at least.
It's a surprising move and shows that Samsung are happy to be tinkering right up into the last minute, and shows that the Galaxy Tab 2 might see similar treatment after they admitted they were surprised with Apple's iPad 2 specs and pricing.
The Galaxy S II official microsite no longer lists the exact technical specs of the CPU, so we can only assume something’s cooking there for real.
The second-gen Galaxy S was launched at MWC and is the best Android competitor to Apple's iPhone 4 to date.
When Samsung showed it off at MWC it had Exynos dual-core solution at its heart, but it seems that yields of that chip haven’t been good enough for the expected high demand for the handset.
So, in steps NVIDIA with its soon-to-be-ubiquitous Tegra 2 – which runs at the same 1GHz as Exynos and offers comparable performance – to fill in the supply gap – but that’s not good enough and they are upping it to 1.2GHZ.
The decision as to which part you’ll get in your next Samsung smartphone will depend on which territory you’re in, with Americans and Brits likely to get first bite at the Exynos cherry and should be running the new clock speed too.
Yes it’s a little confusing, but we think if you don’t get a iPhone, Samsung is the next best thing, the screen is fantastic and it’s a cool phone and brand – something HTC haven’t really nailed yet.

UPDATE: Today, the company has tweeted out a two-part notice assuring us that that will not be the case and things are proceeding “as planned.” April will see the first retail appearance of the 8.5mm-thick Android phone, though Samsung does advise that “it will be gradually rolled out in each market according to the local launch timetable.”
