We might be moving towards 4G, but there is no level playing field even when it comes to 3G. Your internet surfing speed might be severely compromised if you happen to live in places like Milton Keynes or Liverpool. Top10.com has compiled a list of UK cities which are right at the bottom when it comes to internet speed hierarchy. According to the survey, the average 3G speed in the UK is about 2.62 Mbps, whereas, if you happen to live on Peterborough, you may enjoy the average download speed of 3.86 Mbps. Oh, you lucky lucky people.
The worst offender is Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, where the residents have to suffer through average download speed of 1.73 Mbps. Things do not get much better for the second worst offender Leicester, which offers slightly better download speed of 2.01 Mbps. Just imagine the plight of Milton Keynes residents, who have to wait for catastrophically high 2 minutes just to load their Angry Birds. Our hearts go out to them.
In order to improve your online life, you might want to leave Northern England, which homes 5 out of the slowest internet towns. The list of slowest towns is capped by the country's second largest town Birmingham with an average download speed hovering around 2.43 megabits per second.
Implementation of 3G technology costs a bucket so it is understandable if some towns are still under the radar of major companies. But the presence of bigger towns such Liverpool and Birmingham on the list is worrisome. In case you are wondering, then London is placed 15th on the list. Not a proud moment for London residents, eh!
The survey was conducted over the time period of last 3 months. The survey universe consisted of thousands of users nationwide who opted-in. In the meantime, carrier companies and the government are working towards removing this disparity. The government is expected to auction additional spectrum for the implementation of 4G services. However, we would want the 4G service to be more efficient and smooth in its performance throughout the country. Let us know if your town made it to the list of shame.
