LG Takes On 3DS With The Thrill

Portable gaming is all the rage this year. You're all thinking 3DS and Xperia Play but there's another kid on the block which looks equally exciting.  LG has jumped into the potentially lucrative 3D market with the first glasses-free 3D smartphone.

Eventually 3D, gaming and smatphone capability will be rolled into one on a device like LG's Thrill. It's worth getting excited about but when it boils down to what matters, sales figures is the timing all wrong? The 3DS is a force which won't be stopped pre-orders have proved that and LG won't come close to what Nintendo pulls off.

But enough of the pessimism. The Thrill is a tasty teaser of the future with autostereoscopic 3D screen (4.3 inches worth.) Along with a 1GHz processor, Android (no news on what version yet) and 4G communication network.

David Christopher, AT&T’s chief market marketing officer for wireless said "The whole industry is working on 3D right now.” He continued, “We’re right at the sweet spot for 3D, a lot of games are being created for that format.”  Is he right? The time for 3D is certainly on the horizon but I can't help but think it's too earlier for the Thrill right now. Some people still haven't seen a 3D movie (embarrassingly, I admit that I am one of them.) Will gamers be enough to provide a target-market for 3D in your pocket?

One important factor yet to be revealed is price but it's going to be steep. A lot steeper than the DS, that's for sure.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
