So the first weekend's worth of sales data for Apple's iPad 2 has come in and it looks like it has sold out in less than three days.
Reports are coming in that they sold 1,000,000- iPad over the opening weekend alone - which is a lot more than the original iPad.
According to new statistics from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster and his team, as many as 70% of all the iPads were sold to new customers. Which as you can imagine is great news for Steve Jobs and co.
The numbers of new buyers was particularly significant, Munster told CNN. “We believe this shows Apple is expanding its base of iPad users, which is critical to maintaining its early lead in the growing tablet market," he said. "As the user base grows Apple’s lead widens, and the company has a proven track record of building unmatched brand loyalty, which we believe will be a potent combination as the tablet market evolves.”
Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore also confirmed the sell-out result. He called it "one of Apple's most successful product launches to date.”
However, Munster believes nearly all iPad 2 sales took place on Friday. His team's calls to retailers over the weekend indicated that stocks have not yet been replenished.
The first person to buy the tablet in New York was a Frenchman called Frederick who travelled to the U.S. solely to pick up an iPad 2.
College student Amanda Foote, meanwhile, was the first to turn up at Apple’s flagship store in midtown Manhattan, arriving at 5pm on Wednesday.
She endured severe rain and little sleep but on Friday she sold her spot for $900 (£560), that’s a $400 (£250) profit if you were buying the basic $499 (£310) model. Clever girl.
Will there be shortages when it comes to the UK – almost certainly.
