Nintendo may be looking to take a tough stand against the game junkies who were planning to use their 3DS with a Flash card. Japanese retailer Enterking has claimed that any such use of Flash card with 3DS may render the game console unbootable. Such bricking will be carried out remotely by Nintendo. Although, Nintendo refused to confirm or refute the retailer's claim, it made it clear that the company has enough weapons in its arsenal to deal with such tinkering.
The issue of the companies remote controlling their devices was highlighted last week, when Google remotely zapped the malware infested apps from various Android devices. While the remote removal of infected apps was a welcome step, it also makes you wonder how much control the companies are exercising over your devices. The concern becomes especially worrisome when the involved companies are known for their careless flouting of masses' privacy rights. Yes, we are looking at you, Google.
Although, we do not condone piracy, but the electronics companies are increasingly controlling their devices and software with an iron fist and the trend does not seem healthy. Mercifully, some governments are proactively taking steps to ensure that the lawful buyers do not get bullied by the big companies. Recently, the US government had passed the verdict that jailbreaking is no longer a criminal activity. Thus, there is a need to ensure that the buyer get the worth of their purchase price while maintaining the integrity of the device. After all, I would appreciate if my car company would recommend the type of gas to be used, but I certainly would not want it to brick my car, if I choose to not to follow its advise. What is your take on this issue?
