The iPad 2: Nothing More Than An Expensive Toy?

The iPad 2 may be new but its criticisms aren't. The same old worries and reservations that bloggers had about the original iPad are back again. Here's a look at what's being said:

“I have no plans to purchase an iPad because I don’t want to buy a product that is intentionally closed so that I can only buy manufacturer-approved applications,” -Slashdot blogger Chris Travers

“I think they are just another fad like eReaders were a couple of years ago,” “The thing is too big to drop in a pocket like a cell, yet doesn’t have the power of a netbook."-  Slashdot blogger Hairyfeet

This is where the likes of the Dell Streak have jumped in, combining the phone and tablet, but some people have got a smartphone, they don’t want another one, they want a tablet. There’s some interesting points been made but some of it seems like simple Apple hating without true justification. Take the comment below for example,

“Producers of content will always prefer something with a keyboard."- blogger Robert Pogson

What about this?

Travers also noted that, “Until the market matures, they are basically very expensive toys,”

This does seem to make sense. Whether you're pro-pad or anti-pad he makes a very important point. You can whine and moan about Apple's strict control over its hardware or its lack of Flash and USB, if those are you're issues, it's simple, go Android. But whatever tablet you get, it's important to remember that this is a brand-new technology. The first few tablets are pretty much experiments by manufactures and its going to be a while until we can see the true potential of tablets at an affordable price. Despite the doom mongering, laptops have got nothing to worry about just yet

And it seems others agree,

"I don’t see myself buying a tablet any time soon — not when I can get a laptop with 4x the memory, 4x the cpu, and 20x the storage for less" said blogger Barbara Hudson.

So what about you? Tablet, or Laptop?

Well, it’s a good job no one listens to the inane teenage rantings of bloggers who are annoyed that their paper-round doesn’t pay enough for them to buy one.

No matter what they say, Apple will sell millions of these and will continue to every time they release a new one. Yes, you can buy faster laptops for less but it’s just gonna be a bog standard laptop that will be nigh on unusable in a year.

The iPad just does what its supposed to do, no fuss, no slowing down, no bloatware and a good battery life. You pay for style and simplicity. Not all of us want to spend a few hours a week fine tuning a PC trying to get it to work with something, trying to get it doing something it should or even just starting up.

I’ll stick with my iMac and iPad1. The iPad2 didn’t offer anything new that I wanted so I’ll use it happily for another year.

  • I would give tablets another couple of years before they have the same power as a netbook and the price of a netbook

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
