Apple have such a big influence on what their competition do, none more so than today. In an interview, Samsung's mobile division VP Lee Don-Joo admitted that the iPad 2 made some parts of Samsung's 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab looks "inadequate," and the iPad 2"²s pricing might force Samsung to lower the price for its yet to be released tablet.
They were planning to sell the much improved and bigger version at a price more than the 7-inch version - but with the average sales for the 7-inch Tab they might have to rethink this strategy all together.
Samsung obviously aren’t that confident that the better specs for the Galaxy tab 10.1 are going to be good enough to compete with Apple and its reasonably cheaper iPad 2 - so can we expect a lower price ? We think so.
Joo stated: "Apple made it very thin. We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate.” We don't expect Samsung to pull the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab from the market and release a thinner version. It's more likely that Samsung simply sees the iPad 2"²s thinness as a big challenge for it engineers to replicate at a reasonable price.
Joo added:"The 10-inch tablet was to be priced higher than the 7-inch, but we will have to think that over.”
So Apple's announcement has quite clearly ruffled the feathers of Samsung and their plans for the new and improved Galaxy Tab 10.1 - it looks likely that they are going to have to have a long hard look at whether they can afford to sell it at a price way above its main rival - even if it is way above the specs of the iPad 2. This is what were calling the Apple effect.
We for one think that if it’s a better product and Samsung should stand by their creation, but consumers are a fickle lot – so if it’s a lot more expensive many may jump to the good-ship Apple. So what can they do to compete with the iPad 2?
They need come up with a decent plan that means it can compete on level playing field – what this is we’re not sure – maybe preload it with £50 worth of Apps to sweeten the deal – or even a future discount on the Samsung Galaxy S2 – giving early adopters a decent reason to stick with Samsung for both tablets and phones.
